About us

South Downs Nutrition is a rapidly growing independent business in the very heart of the South Downs Park - an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, handily located on the borders of Surrey, Hampshire and West Sussex. Our aim is to improve the overall health of every client that we work with. Many who come to us are confused about what they should eat to help them attain optimal health. With our extensive knowledge and experience, we encourage our clients to step onto the pathway of improving health by guiding them to a high quality, natural diet which is minimally processed, delicious to taste, and nutrient dense. Hippocrates wisely stated that disease begins in the gut, and as the quality of the Western diet has gradually deteriorated, so to has the quality of our overall health. If you add the numerous over-the-counter remedies in to the equation, then it is easy to see why our gut health is in such a poor state. Diseases and health conditions unheard of, or extremely rare less than 100 years ago are now rife amongst the general population. We at South Downs Nutrition believe in getting to the root causes of illness rather than merely treating the symptoms. So first and foremost, we concentrate on reducing the toxicity and inflammation within the digestive system.

If you have an ongoing illness that has been causing you troublesome symptoms for some time, then you have come to the right place.

Common conditions that we can help include:-

  • ADHD

  • ALS

  • Autism

  • Allergies

  • Anaemia

  • Anxiety

  • Autoimmune conditions (many)

  • Crohn's disease and colitis

  • Constipation

  • Type 2 Diabetes

  • Depression

  • Diarrhoea

  • Duodenum issues

  • Eczema

  • Fatigue

  • F.P.I.E.S

This is by no means an exhaustive list and many more conditions can also be dealt with by improving the environment of the gut. You may have several of these symptoms or maybe they come and go from time to time - this means that your gut microbial population (AKA gut flora) is out of balance and needs to be addressed.

The gut wall has been designed to be largely impermeable but can become leaky if damaged by an inflammatory diet or toxic OTC medications. An eating regime that is based on highly processed and nutrient deficient foods such as sugars, refined carbohydrates, fast food and ready meals are highly inflammatory and packed full of artificial additives which combine to threaten the structural integrity of our gut wall by decimating the natural gut flora and digestive enzymes.

The GAPS (Gut and Physiology Syndrome / Gut and Psychology Syndrome) style of treatments ensure that your body will be nurtured and nourished, and will enable the in-built healing process to take place. GAPS patients and clients won't be hungry as the body is satiated with all that Nature offers. Plenty of natural fats, proteins and carbohydrates, which provide vital vitamins and minerals, are provided throughout each step of the treatment journey.

The lives of GAPS patients and clients are regularly turned around and there are countless testimonials from those who have found true health from situations of utter despair. Children have gone from being anxious, isolated, distant, disruptive and miserably hungry fussy eaters, to relaxed, enthusiastic, actively involved, cooperative, happily satiated thriving individuals. Adult lives have been changed from ones of extreme mood swings, countless allergies, endless coughs and colds, headaches, stomach issues and joint pain to ones of stable moods, a reduction of allergies, less intense symptoms of colds and flu - all helping to achieve a digestion system that functions in the way it is designed to.

GAPS patients and clients also learn traditional ways of preparing and preserving foods as the human race used to before modern conveniences were invented. Preservation processes such as fermentation provides some great bacterial benefits for our gut, whether that is by utilising dairy, fruit or vegetables. Produce such as milk kefir (fermented dairy) for example, has been used for thousands of years to help heal and protect the gut microbiome from pathogens, food poisoning and other harmful situations. Fermented foods are packed full of easy to digest, gut nourishing goodness that used to be part of every meal not so long ago.

At South Downs Nutrition we understand that individual needs vary, and each case will therefore require different help and advice. Some clients will need basic food preparation skills while other need guidance on where to source organic free range meat or dairy. Some will be looking for ideas of how to reduce household toxins, whilst others will be looking for help with how to rebuild their gut health after a course of antibiotics.

Whatever your health issues are, by using the GAPS protocol methods of treatment, you'll certainly start to improve your immediate health and create better long term wellbeing possibilities.

Mart - Founder of South Downs Nutrition

Still smiling at about 20 miles into an ultra marathon

I’m Mart and I am proud to have started a business which can achieve such a positive effect on people's health.

A large part of my life has been dominated

by participating in various sport and fitness competitions and I have been blessed with a physiology which has allowed me to compete

on the international stage in some memorable

multi-sport events. I have also been

fortunate enough to have participated in many

other challenges such as the prestigious

French road cycling event for amateur

riders The Etape du Tour - I remember that

brutal day in the Pyrenees like it was yesterday.

As the years have passed I have transitioned to

more functional types of fitness competitions,

namely Crossfit and HyRox events.

I love running and am enjoying the challenges of some longer distance events such as marathons and ultra marathons and the South Downs area of England, where we are based, has a varied terrain and is full of challenging hills which are perfect for overall conditioning.

The human body has been perfectly designed for a full pattern of movement, and keeping mobile, active and flexible as we age, is of paramount importance

if we are to ensure good mobility into our

advancing years.

As a seasoned athlete, I know how important it is to be consuming a nutrient dense diet, which is packed full of natural fats, proteins from outdoor reared, pastured animals and a variety of organically grown seasonal fruit and vegetables. I eat a very clean

and natural diet and find locally sourced produce

for the majority of the food that I buy. I try and eat

with the seasons and also ferment a lot of different foods which have countless benefits for our digestive system and overall health.

For many years, as a health & fitness coach and personal trainer, I have been advising clients on how to improve their wellbeing with considered dietary choices, as well as how to incorporate healthy nutritional protocols in to their lives. I have also been running a local chapter for the Weston Price Foundation, which is the world's best resource when it comes to making improvements to our health through informed, traditional food choices. Through the chapter we guide all those who contact us to

the very best food suppliers across the region. This advice is offered free of charge and is a great way for people to dramatically improve

their overall wellbeing.

Empowering others to make the right food and lifestyle choices, that can help keep them free of sickness, is very humbling indeed.

Testimonials

Connecting with Mart has changed my life. I had 2 autoimmune conditions and was fearful of dairy due to being lactose intolerant. After following his dietary advice I am now able to eat raw dairy, which in itself would have been enough for me.

But - bonus my hay fever is no more and I no longer need asthma medication. My gut and I are truly grateful - "Both of us" can't thank or recommend Mart enough.

From the moment that I started working with Mart, I knew I was in safe hands. He has a deep understanding of the relationship between nutrition & fitness and is incredibly knowledgable about what foods are necessary to fuel the body for optimal performance.

What sets him apart is his ability to make healthy eating enjoyable and accessible. He doesn't believe in extreme diets or deprivation, but rather emphasises the importance of a balanced, nutrient-rich diet that incorporates whole foods, proteins and healthy fats.
